THE LISTENING WALK

The Listening Walk was established in 2019 by Samaritan David Matthews.

In September 2025 he will set off and endeavour to walk the 6100 miles once more.

Walking to over 200 Samaritans Branches for Awareness

David decided to walk to over 200 branches of Samaritans across the UK and Ireland to raise the profile of the charity and support their aim of reducing the number of people who die by suicide.

A 6,100-Mile Walk Across Lockdown

The first walk took place either side of lockdown and was completed in 2021. The total miles walked was 6100 (9800 km).

In the 2025 Kings New Years Honours list David was awarded an MBE for services to The Listening Walk and Samaritans.

There is more work to be done. 7491 people took their own life in 2023.

For this reason David will be repeating The Listening Walk. He'll be walking on his own and totally unaided, camping along the way and carrying all his own equipment.

The Listening Walk: A 6,100-Mile Journey

In September 2025 David will set off on his second 6,100-mile journey across the UK and Ireland, raising awareness for Samaritans and suicide prevention—proving every step can make a difference.

Walking for Life: David Matthews’ Mission

Covering the 6,100 miles on foot, David will be walking across the UK and Ireland once again to shine a light on suicide prevention and the vital work of Samaritans.

Step by Step: A Walk to Save Lives

The walk will be another incredible 6,100-mile challenge across the UK and Ireland, walking to raise awareness for suicide prevention and to support the Samaritans’ life-changing work.
